“Morning” sickness can happen at other times

Pregnancy nausea and vomiting can occur during the day or night. Severe vomiting can cause dehydration and may need medical treatment. [1,2] You do not need to wait for a routine visit if symptoms are making it difficult to drink or function.

Record what is happening

For the consultation, note when symptoms started, how often you vomit and which foods or drinks you can keep down. Mention changes in urine, weight, medicines or daily activities. Describe the effect on you rather than comparing yourself with someone else’s pregnancy.

Ask for a workable plan

Ask what could be contributing, what you can try and whether treatment is needed. If medicine is recommended, clarify how to take it and what to do if you vomit after a dose. Ask when to contact the team again if symptoms persist. This article does not select an anti-sickness medicine.

Do not delay help

Seek prompt medical advice if vomiting is accompanied by very dark urine, reduced urination, marked weakness, weight loss, pain, fever or blood in vomit. Inability to keep fluids down needs attention. [1,2] If you feel seriously unwell, seek urgent in-person care rather than waiting for WhatsApp.

Common questions

Is nausea limited to the morning?

No; the name does not describe everyone’s experience. [1]

Must I cope without treatment?

No. Tell your clinician about the impact and ask about suitable options. [2]

Should I stop my regular medicines if I vomit?

Ask the prescriber what to do about the specific medicine and dose. Do not make a blanket change without advice.
